Rescued, Redesigned and Published

The phone call came from Richard Stone, who I’d previously helped with his book Hidden in Plain Sight.

“Tim, I’ve been working on a fun project with two friends, and we need a new book designer who can finish it and get it on the market by Christmas.”

Along with friends Polly Brewer and Juliana Harris, Richard had been writing short works about one of their collective favorite topics: cats, and the roles their beloved feline friends have played in their lives. They also wanted the book to include dazzling visuals and favorite photos of their cats, with the goal of creating a work that presented their stories and their cats not just creatively, but also artistically.

They’d been putting the book together for more than a year when their book designer decided she was unable to finish the project. So they called me.

I took Richard, Polly and Juliana step-by-step through the independent-publishing process, used Adobe InDesign to redesigned the book to be compatible with Amazon.com and CreateSpace standards, and invested several months going back-and-forth on drafts until they were satisfied with the result.

The best part? At their book launch party, they called Cat Tales “not just a book, but a work of art.”
