Author Richard Stone had been publishing biographical columns about local progressive activists for years in Fresno’s nonprofit Community Alliance newspaper. He called me because he wanted to compile those columns into a single volume that the newspaper could use as a fundraiser.

He started by gathering the photos and Word documents from the old columns and seeking updates from those being profiled. He provided the entire stack to me on a single flash drive, and I got to work.

Using MS Word, I first standardized all of the profiles. Then I created a template for each chapter so Richard could approve a general look and feel for the book. I also standardized all of the activists’ portraits, because this book was to include the activists’ portraits along with their profiles. I also designed the cover, based on a concept from the Community Alliance’s editor. The one hiccup? I’d begun the layout process when he announced, “The columns will be back from the copy editor soon.” Whoops. It’s always best to save layout work until after the editing is finished!

In the end, I produced a volume that raised funds for the newspaper and made Richard proud.
